  • Trek Overview

    With the majestic Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Baudha Himal ranges as its backdrop, Tsum Valley is arguably the most picturesque, remote, and isolated area in the entire Gorkha District. Trekking in the Tsum Valley became accessible in 2008, with the closest roadhead being Machha Khola, located 160 kilometers  northeast of Kathmandu. The valley is drained by the Shear Khola, which meets the Budhi Gandaki at Nyak.

    Tsum Valley  offers  sacred pilgrimage site in the Himalayas, inhabited by Tibetan descendants with a distinct dialect who trade with the Kyirong region, and known for its rich culture and ancient art.The Tsum Valley trekking trails are lined with mani walls made of countless stone slabs that have been carved with images of deities and prayers, and the valley is dotted with artistic chortens. 

    The 14-day Tsum Valley trek is challenging, involves numerous days of trek in altitudes over 3,000m and requires a good level of fitness. The trail offers stunning views of Himalayan mountain ranges, including Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Manaslu, Churke Himal, and the Poshyop Glacier. We trek through pine forests, fascinating villages, and immerse in the himalayan cultural heritage.Trekkers are able to observe the subtropical region's gradual transformation into a semiarid region, as well as the changes in climate and weather, while on their journey.

    Tsum Valley is home to abundant wildlife, including herds of Himalayan Thar and Blue Sheep.The journey includes crossing dramatic rivers, suspension bridges, cascading waterfalls,and alpine meadows  making for an unforgettable experience.Trekkers can visit a historic Buddhist site where Milarepa meditated in mountain caves. The valley also houses historic monasteries like Rachen Gumba, Mu Gumba, and Gumba Lungdang. It's remote location has preserved unique culture for centuries.

    Tsum Valley is home to 4000 indigenous Tsumbas, with 300 residing in Kathmandu and 200 outside Nepal. Tsumba culture believes in reincarnation and values the roles of holy men, lamas, and astrologers. Some families still practice polyandry. Trekking in the region allows for witnessing of local rituals, including burning butter lamps and festivals to ward off evil entities. Traditional medicinal practitioners, called amchis, use herbal techniques to cure physical and psychological ailments due to the lack of proper medical services.
