  • Trek Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is an unparalleled adventure, offering an unspoiled glimpse into Nepal's diverse culture and breathtaking scenery. This trek circumnavigates the majestic Mt. Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest mountain, and takes you through the Manaslu Conservation Area, a controlled trekking route requiring a Restricted Area Permit.

Unlike the crowded trails of the Annapurna and Everest regions, the Manaslu Circuit Trek remains relatively untouched, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. The trek is physically demanding, but culturally enriching and scenically uplifting, with stunning trans-Himalayan settings that straddle the borders of Nepal and Tibet.

The trek takes you through a range of landscapes, from rice and millet terraces to snow-capped peaks and glaciers, with high and lofty suspension bridges, mighty gorges, and hauntingly beautiful waterfalls along the way. The upper region of the Budi Gandaki River is home to the Nupri people, who are direct descendants of Tibetan immigrants, and the trek is infused with a strong Tibetan influence in speech, dress, and customs.

While the Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered challenging, with steep ridges, cliffs, and icy passes, the awe-inspiring views of Mt. Manaslu make every challenge worthwhile. At Himalayan Terrain Treks and Expedition, we offer a 13-day itinerary that can be extended to include the hidden valley of Tsum for those who want to explore more of this remarkable region.

    Trek Itinerary

Upon arrival, a Himalayan Terrain representative will take you to Vastu Boutique Hotel or a similar accommodation, a 30-minute drive away. Later in the evening, there will be a trip briefing and time to purchase any necessary items.

The trail has some minor ups and downs before crossing the Tharo Khola and arriving at Khorla Besi. We'll continue on with more ascents and descents until we reach Tatopani, where we can take a break or enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot springs. Crossing the Budhi Gandaki on a suspension bridge, we'll make our way to Doban and then climb more stairs to Tharo Bharyang. From there, we'll ascend gently to the charming Gurung village of Jagat, where we'll verify our trekking permits before settling in for the night at a comfortable teahouse.

Leaving Jagat behind, we'll continue our trek through dense sub-tropical forests, rocky ridges, and corn and millet fields as we make our way to Deng. The trail will take us across small rivers and rustic villages, and we'll cross a suspension bridge and climb over a rocky ridge to reach Salleri. As we descend to Sirdibas, we'll notice the presence of mani walls, kani, and Buddhist prayer flags, which serve as reminders of the area's Tibetan influence.

After walking upstream to a long suspension bridge in Philim and having our permits checked, we'll turn north and follow a fairly level trail that crosses millet fields to Ekle Bhatti. From there, we'll encounter a steep, uninhabited gorge that we'll descend before crossing the Budhi Gandaki river. In Ghap, we'll encounter a beautiful Mani wall with intricate carvings depicting meditative poses of Buddha and the Tibetan saint Milarepa. We'll continue to see mani stones and walls as we climb through deep forests of rhododendron, fir, and bamboo to reach Namrung. Along the way, we may even spot the grey Langur monkey or Nepal's colorful national bird, the Danphe or impeyan pheasant. Trekking permits will be inspected at the police checkpost here, and we'll spend the night in Namrung, where you'll find comfortable tea shops and restaurants.

As we trek beyond Namrung, we'll enter Upper Nupri, where the influence of Tibetan culture is clearly evident in the dress, dialect, and lifestyle of the local people. The trail will take us steadily uphill, passing mani walls and lush fields, and through forests of fir, rhododendron, and oak before arriving at Lihi. This charming village is known for its stone houses of unusual architecture, numerous stupas, and picturesque barley terraces.

Continuing on, we'll cross the side valley of Simnang Himal and arrive at Sho, where we'll admire some fine paintings in Kani. The village of Lho offers extraordinary views of Manaslu and Manaslu North, and we'll have the opportunity to explore the famous Ribung Gompa. At the western end of the village, we'll find a Tibetan-style chorten and a huge mani wall. We'll spend the night in Lho, taking in the unique culture and stunning scenery.

Our trek today begins with a descent, followed by a bridge crossing and ascent. We'll then make our way through a damp forest of rhododendron and pine, following the north fork of a stream. Depending on the season, the path may be muddy or icy. As we emerge onto a plateau at Shyala, we'll be greeted by a breathtaking vista of Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Manaslu I, and large glaciers straight ahead. Adding to the beauty of the area is a chorten and a small gompa with a huge prayer wheel.

Continuing on, we'll pass through extensive pastures and fields of Samagaon, where the villagers keep herds of yaks and a few horses. At this elevation, the only crops grown are potatoes and barley. We'll stay in Samagaon for the night, marveling at the stunning views and immersing ourselves in the unique culture of the region.

Today, we'll spend the day acclimating to the high elevation and thin air at Samagaon. We'll remain active by going on a hike and also take the opportunity to explore the local culture and lifestyle of this principal Nupri village. One option for our hike is to visit the Pungyen Gompa, located south of Samagaon. This sacred cultural heritage is hidden behind a ridge, on the lap of mighty Manaslu. The hike offers stunning views of Manaslu, and we may also spot Himalayan Thar and grazing yaks along the way.

Another option is to hike to Manaslu base camp via Birendra Tal. We'll head north from Samagaon and continue on to a glacial lake at 3650m - Birendra lake. From there, we'll continue to the base camp, turning left on a steep trail that gains 1150m altitude. It's important to stay hydrated and take it easy to adjust to the altitude. Along the way, we'll walk north of the Manaslu glacier to the miniature village of tents and prayer flags - Manaslu Base Camp (4800m) - the foot of mighty Manaslu.

Our trek today will be shorter as we reach higher elevations. The valley will begin to widen, and we'll notice several mani walls along the way. Descending to the Budhi Gandaki river, we'll follow it to a bridge over a side stream, passing through a forest of juniper and birch. Crossing the river on a wooden bridge, we'll climb steeply across the river and be rewarded with truly spectacular mountain scenery.

We'll finally arrive at the large white kani and reach Samdo. As we'll likely have some free time, consider exploring the nearby villages or hiking up past the prayer flags to Samdo peak for fine views of Manaslu. Rhee village in Tibet is just a day's walk via the Lajyyang La pass (5098m) from Samdo.

Today marks our second day of acclimatization, and we have the opportunity to take a hike to the Tibetan border. Walking between the borders of Nepal and Tibet, we'll be spreading the peace message of Buddha - Om "Shanti," "Shanti," "Shanti" - all around the world. If we're lucky, we may even witness a yak caravan passing the border.

The hike itself is picturesque, with arid rocky terrain and stunning views. As we walk, keep your eyes open for Blue sheep, Pica, and Himalayan marmot. After our hike, we'll return to Samdo and spend one more night there, soaking up the unique culture and stunning natural beauty of the region.

Today, we begin our descent on a wide and gentle trail. Passing through fields and old mani walls, we'll cross the Budi Gandaki river - which is now small and narrow - on a wooden bridge. We'll then climb gently through tundra and juniper, opposite the huge Larkya glacier that drops from Manaslu North. While trekking, we may sometimes hear avalanches roaring down from the peak, but our trail will be safely out of their path.

Continuing on, we'll climb towards the valley of Salka Khola and climb up again to Dharmasala or Larkya La Phedi. Today's walk on rugged terrain comprises stunning views of Mt. Manaslu and Larkya glacier. As we are trekking at high altitude, it's crucial to pay extra attention to our body's signals. At our destination, there is a small stone guest house with basic facilities for lodging and food in dormitory-style rooms. We'll stay here for the night, preparing ourselves for a big day tomorrow.

Today is a big day for us as we will be heading to the highest point of our trek - Larkya La pass. We'll wake up early and have breakfast before setting off on this challenging section of our journey. Along the way, we'll pass through rustic villages, clear glacier lakes, beautiful valleys, and a wide range of flora and fauna, not to mention some notable snowcapped peaks.

The route comprises a long and gentle climb beside a moraine to a valley on the north side of the Larkya Glacier, where we can enjoy great views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. After reaching the top of the moraine, the route becomes rougher and indistinct as we cross the moraine to the south of steep grassy slopes. While there are few cairns en route acting as landmarks, snow can cause problems in navigation. After a while, we will descend to four frozen lakes before making the steep climb in the last section of the pass. From here, we'll enjoy outstanding views of Himlung near Tibet, Kang Guru, Cheo Himal, and the massive Annapurna II.

Our descent will begin from here, and we'll walk for 3 to 4 hours before finishing with a rewarding walk into misty low pastures in the early evening, with Mount Manaslu looming in the distance. This will be a memorable day, and we'll be proud of our accomplishment as we rest for the night.

We'll start our final day of walking with a delicious breakfast, feeling energized and ready to take on the trail. Before leaving, we'll head out to a nearby ridge where we can catch one last glimpse of the beautiful Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, Himlung Himal, and Cheo Himal, waving goodbye to us in the distance.

We'll keep descending on the trail, crossing a high pasture and a bridge over the Dudh Khola River. From here, we'll walk through a rhododendron forest and follow a trail through a narrow valley until we reach the highest cultivated land of the valley at Karache. Walking through lush fields, we'll then make a steep climb over a ridge before the trail comes off the ridge in a big, sweeping arc to the river bank. We'll continue walking until we reach Tilije, taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying our final moments on the trail. This will be a memorable day, and we'll be filled with a sense of accomplishment as we complete our trek.

We'll retrace our way  back to Kathmandu, where our journey began. After taking a jeep ride of 3-4 hours from Tilije to Besi Sahar, we'll board on a private car for the approximately 6-7 hour ride to the city. Upon arrival, we'll check into the Vastu Boutique Hotel (or similar) and freshen up with a much-needed shower. You'll then have the option to relax or explore the colorful and vibrant city of Kathmandu, with its ancient temples, lively markets, and delicious cuisine. This will be a perfect way to end your trek, and we hope you leave Nepal with unforgettable memories.
