  • Trek Overview

Experience the allure of the newly opened teahouse trek, once an exclusive camping trek, as the mountains reveal their grandeur and the lush valleys embrace you with their serenity. At an impressive height of 8,586 meters, Kanchenjunga stands proudly as the third tallest mountain in the world, surpassed only by Everest and K2.Unlike the high passes around Everest and Annapurna, this route sees little traffic and groups.

The name Kanchenjunga is derived from Tibetan word "Kang-chen-zod-nga" which means "The five Treasures of the Great Snow",as it contains five major peaks-Kanchenjunga I(8586m),Kanchenjunga West/Yalungkang(8505m),Kanchenjunga South(8494m),Kangwachen(7903 m), and Kumbhakarna (7710m).The treasure represents the five repositories of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grains, and holy books.

In addition to the main peaks, there are approximately twenty peaks over 7,000 meters with notable summits like Kambachen, Janu, Jongsong, Kabru, Tent Peak, and the Twins. Additionally, you will encounter numerous peaks over 6,000 meters, surrounded by five major glacial systems, including Zumu, Talung, Rathong, Kanchenjunga, and Yalung glaciers.

Since, the locals worship the mountain, there is a tradition among mountaineers not to stand on the actual summit. This magnificent peak spans the border between Nepal and Sikkim in India, captivating the hearts of adventurers worldwide.

Our journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to bhadrapur and continues on a road trip to Chirwa via Taplejung, from where the trek commences. We traverse through vibrant villages such as Mitlung, Ghunsa, Khambachen, and Lhonak, ultimately reaching Pangpema, the base camp for expeditions attempting the North Face of Kanchenjunga II.

Previously believed to be the highest peak in the world until the mid-1800s, this awe-inspiring mountain is now part of the protected Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. As a result, trekkers are required to obtain a special trekking permit, ensuring the preservation of the area's pristine flora and fauna.

Discover the captivating Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, a sanctuary of unparalleled beauty. Encounter endangered species like the Snow Leopard, Bengal Tiger, Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Assamese Macaque, and an array of exotic birds. The trail meanders through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to expansive grasslands, tranquil valleys, glacial moraines, and rugged slopes. Along the way, be mesmerized by cascading rivers, enchanting waterfalls, vibrant meadows, and forests adorned with rhododendron and birch.

During the trek, you'll have the opportunity to link both the  north and south base camps trail on the Nepali side by crossing five passes, each offering its own unique charm and challenges. Starting from the south side of the Tamo La Pass(3900m) Sele La Pass(4115 m), we make our way through the rugged terrain, experiencing the thrill of conquering Sinion La Pass, Mirgin La Pass, and Sinelapche La Pass.. These exhilarating passes provide stunning panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment as you traverse the rugged Himalayan landscape.

While the challenging route demands physical fitness and endurance due to its remote nature, the allure of its breathtaking beauty serves as a powerful motivator, making every step along the way a testament to the indomitable human spirit.

The Kanchenjunga Area is homeland to the Limbu people, who speak language related to Tibetan and follow a mixture of Buddhist,Hindu and animist beliefs. This ethereal region  is also adorned with the presence of Rai, Chhetri, Gurung, and Sherpa communities, adding to the tapestry of cultural richness. The trekkers can enjoy the unique opportunity to gain insight into the local way of life and visit cultural gems such as Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries.

Strap on your selfie stick, polish those filters, and prepare to embark on an 'instagrramable' adventure, capturing picture-perfect moments amidst the majestic mountains!

As we gaze northward, the snow-capped ridges beyond the Kanchenjunga glacier captivate with their dramatic presence.

Let's get active during this rest day by climbing to the base camp of Mt. Janu which stands like frozen giants, casting their enchanting spell over the valley. There are no settlements along the way, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the awe-inspiring vistas that surround us. Prepare your lenses, for this is a true paradise for photographers.
