With the majestic Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Baudha Himal ranges as its backdrop, Tsum Valley is arguably the most picturesque, remote, and isolated area in the entire Gorkha District. Trekking in the Tsum Valley became accessible in 2008, with the closest roadhead being Machha Khola, located 160 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu. The valley is drained by the Shear Khola, which meets the Budhi Gandaki at Nyak.

Tsum Valley is home to 4000 indigenous Tsumbas, with 300 residing in Kathmandu and 200 outside Nepal. Tsumba culture believes in reincarnation and values the roles of holy men, lamas, and astrologers. Some families still practice polyandry. Trekking in the region allows for witnessing of local rituals, including burning butter lamps and festivals to ward off evil entities. Traditional medicinal practitioners, called amchis, use herbal techniques to cure physical and psychological ailments due to the lack of proper medical services.
