An underexplored gem in Nepal, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is blissfully uncrowded compared to the popular Everest and Annapurna regions. Compared to the trek to the north base camp, the route to the foot of the southern face of the Kanchenjunga massif is shorter, lower in elevation, and less challenging. However, the trekkers also receive a similar level of typical natural and cultural uniqueness.
We travel through subtropical lowlands, rhododendron and alpine forests, and stunning glaciers on the off-the-beaten-path inside Kanchenjunga National Park. Our efforts are rewarded with breathtaking views of the snow-covered mountain peaks of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Janu Himal, as well as the soaring heights of Mt. Rathong Peak and Mt. Kabru.
The trek is strenuous and demands endurance as well as a high level of fitness. We gradually ascent up the valleys, passing through pristine forests, farmland, and peaceful villages as we follow the Yalung Glacier's lateral moraine to the base camp located at Ramche at 4,610 m.
Wildlife enthusiasts may spot elusive creatures, including the Red Panda, Asian black bear, and Snow Leopard. Birdwatchers may have the chance to witness a variety of birds, including snowcocks, pheasants, and golden-breasted fulvetta.
In addition to the stunning scenery and wildlife, the journey offers a fascinating look at the unique traditions, culture, and way of life of the Limbu and Rai communities of Eastern Nepal. In this area, Tibetan and Kirant cultures have left their mark.
